What is health insurance and why do I need it?

Health insurance helps pay for your medical bills and expenses if you have an illness or injury. Health insurance isn't cheap, but you need it. Most often an employer will provide you with health benefits; but if they don't, then it's your responsibility to protect yourself. Even those who are young and healthy need health insurance. Consider what would happen if you got really sick and had to spend a week or more in the hospital, or needed surgery and medications. If you do not have health insurance such a situation could literally wipe out any savings you have and possibly put you deep in debt. Hospitals generally don't refuse care for uninsured patients, but they don't treat people for free either.
